It can become a minefield figuring out if your hat and body protector safety standards are up-to-date in line with relevant organisations.  Find out about the 2024 updated hat and body protector regulations here. It’s a good idea to check before you head out competing.

Since riding helmet standards were merged a few years ago in 2018, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs and the Pony Club require a single “hat tag” to be able to participate in all three organisations’ events. For 2024, this is a pink tag. Once you’ve had your hat checked and tagged with this pink tag you can use it in events across BE, BRC and PC.

Remember, as of 1st January 2023, riding hats with the following standards will NOT be acceptable:

PAS015:1998  and SNELL 2001

Body Protector Update:

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) 2009 standard body protectors will not be accepted to use at BE, BRC or PC events from January 2024.

The BETA 2018 standard will be required, and organisers at events with these requirements will be performing spot checks.

You can still use your BETA 2009 body protector for activities that don’t have rules requiring the latest standard, or for hacking out. It’s best to check individual organisations or venue requirements for their own riding hat and body protector standards 2024, to avoid disappointment.

Please note: BE have given a grace period until 8th April 2024 to update your body protector, due to some issues with supply shortages.

Top Tip: riding helmets need to be replaced after 3-5 years due to natural wear and tear on the materials.  Check individual manufacturers for their official guidance on their riding hats. Of course, if you have a fall it is recommended that you replace your riding hat no matter how old.

In myYardd, you can create a digital tack room to record the purchase dates of items. Including riding hats and body protectors, and set reminders, so you know when they are due to be replaced or serviced.
