This recipe is easy to follow and a great rainy day activity to get the kids involved.
Makes 15 bite-size treats (could make 20 if you make them smaller!)
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: and 30 minutes
Ingredients
- 100g old-fashioned oats
- 1 apple – grated
- 1 carrot – grated
- 1 ripe banana – mashed (optional)
- a couple of tablespoons of molasses or honey, plus some extra brown sugar if you fancy
- Optional – add ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- 100g icing sugar and a few drops of water
- Polos and mint leaves for decoration
Method
- Pre-heat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius
- Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper
- In a large bowl, combine the oats, apple, carrot, banana, molasses or honey, cinnamon and sugar if using, and mix well.
- Using a spoon, divide the mixture into 15 – 20 bite-sized treats. Use 2 spoons to divide the mixture and use your hands to roll the mixture into balls
- Place them on your baking tray and space them out evenly. If the thought of sticky hands covered in molasses gives you fear, you could use two spoons to divide the mixture into small paper muffin cases.
- Bake for 20-30 minutes, remove them from the oven and place them on a cooling rack, then leave to cool for around an hour before decorating. Pop them in the fridge if you’re impatient like us!
- Make up the icing by combining the icing sugar with the water to make icing of a thick but pourable consistency. Drizzle the treats with the icing, add a polo mint and top them with a sprig of mint. Feel proud of your homemade horse treat masterpiece!
- Feed to your equine friends and sleep easy knowing you’re the best horse owner ever. It really is the thought that counts.
- Store them in an airtight container in a cool place and they’ll keep for around 2 weeks, but we don’t think they’ll last that long! These make amazing gifts for your fellow equestrians, wrap a few homemade treats in some brown paper or cellophane, pop a pretty bow on and you have a super thoughtful gift for your friends down at the livery yard!
Please note these Homemade Christmas Pudding Horse Treats should be fed in moderation and be wary of feeding molasses to horses if they are sensitive to sugar.
